Funding Opportunities

Chicago Small Business Improvement Fund (SBIF)- Capacity is the biggest issue with growing within an organization. Your staff needs development and training but paying and/or having time to do this is a unrealistic goal for small business. There’s a grant for that..

Envisioning justice grants for individuals- $5,000 These project-based grants support individuals such as educators, organizers, artists, and others who use the arts and humanities to work toward a truly just society. Research projects, podcasts, grassroots publications, and public performances are just a few of the impactful initiatives we fund to create understanding about mass incarceration and its impact on communities in Illinois. By supporting those doing this important work, we build more affirming, engaged, and empowered communities.

Grant Readiness: Preparing for Grant Funding

One of the biggest conversations I have every single day with business owners and nonprofit leaders is about being prepared for grants.

Let’s start by addressing one of the biggest myths: grants are not free money.

Grants are aligned funding—meaning they are awarded to organizations that can clearly demonstrate they are ready, capable, and trustworthy stewards of the funds. Funders are not just investing in your idea—they are investing in your ability to execute, manage, and deliver results.

And that takes preparation.

Grant readiness is not something that happens overnight. It’s a process that requires you to take a real look at your organization or business and ask the right questions:

The truth is, many strong ideas never get funded—not because they aren’t good, but because the organization isn’t fully prepared. On the other hand, organizations that invest time into building their structure, documenting their work, and aligning their goals are the ones that consistently secure funding.

Grant readiness is about positioning yourself before the opportunity even arrives.

So instead of asking, “Where can I find money?”
Start asking, “Am I ready to receive it?”

That shift makes all the difference.

Small Business Center

Here are some resources that have been suggested to clients along the way to provide additional support. As small business owners, a common phrase is that we are flying the plane while building it—managing the day-to-day grind while working to grow at the same time.

That’s why access to the right tools and programs is essential. Whether starting out or scaling, there are opportunities available—from funding and regulatory guidance to trade support and capital access.

Navigating these resources can feel overwhelming, but with the right strategy and support, businesses can move from simply managing operations to growing with intention.

Turn your vision into a clear, sustainable path forward.

Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (DCEO)

This summer, take advantage of resources offered through the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (DCEO), a key agency supporting small business growth across the state. DCEO provides access to funding opportunities, business support services, workforce development programs, and guidance to help businesses start, scale, and expand.

Ready to Access Funding and Grow Your Organization?

Have you ever wondered how organizations actually secure grant funding?
You’ve probably heard of grant writers—but the truth is, success takes more than just writing a proposal.

It requires strategy.
It requires access to the right opportunities.
And it requires guidance on navigating state, federal, and even government contract funding.

Many organizations believe they need a full development or procurement department to compete—but that’s no longer the case.

We are in a time where you can think beyond traditional structures—leveraging creative strategies, partnerships, and targeted funding opportunities to bring your vision to life.

Whether you’re a small business, nonprofit, or municipality, the key is aligning your goals with the right funding streams—and having the right partner to guide the process from vision to implementation.
